Simon and Levi, two of her brothers, avenge Dinah by killing all the men in the city. The story says that Dinah was raped by an Egyptian prince. In the Bible, Dinah's story is only briefly mentioned. No language and mild violence. The Red Tent by Anita Diamant tells the story of the biblical character Dinah, Jacob's daughter and Joseph's sister. I will not let my children or sisters near this book. There are passing mentions of the male anatomy, bestiality, parental/spousal abuse, masturbation and the description of a rape scene. Normally, I would have given up, but the story itself was too enthralling that I couldn’t. Even so, the story and writing itself are fascinating. Diamant, the book’s author, has faced accusations of blasphemy for her imaginative departure from the events of Genesis 34.

As in all true love stories, they become deeply devoted to each other. The bond of womanhood that exists in the “red tent” and the sanctity that the women attribute to the power of procreation is a laudable aspect of this book. The basic plot of The Red Tent is this: Dinah meets Shalem (who's called Shechem in the Bible), a Hivvite and a prince. They love her, and it is their influence that sustains her through a hard-working youth, a calling to midwifery, barbaric tragedy and, eventually, happiness in a new home in a foreign land. The story revolves around her mothers Leah, Rachel, Zilpah and Bilhah, the four wives of Jacob, and shows how each one molded and shaped Dinah’s life.
